I’m Tony, and this is how I got first in James Ruse!

Don't worry, I was also terrible at English. By the end of Year 11, I was ranked 𝟭𝟮𝟰𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝟭𝟱𝟴.

In fact, I was doing so badly that I had to join extra morning classes for English mentoring.

But, by the end of Year 12, I had topped English, coming 𝟭𝘀𝘁 in Trials AND overall in James Ruse.

Ms Korch came in with the final marks.

I was praying. Praying that I would get above average.

Instead, I came 1st in English Yr 12.

𝗔𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀.
𝗩𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.

Every time I handed in an essay, comments like these were handed straight back to me. To be honest, I didn’t even know how to use this feedback – I kept writing slop, praying to just scrape by.

I could never crack the top 25% or get an A-range mark. I was so frustrated.

I still remember getting ready to leave without making eye contact so no one would ask about my mark.

Woah! I came 1st in English Yr 12!

"What? 𝘛𝘰𝘯𝘺 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘯?? That dumbass?”
"Bro, weren’t you always trash at English?"

That evening, I proudly put my exam paper on Mum’s desk.
